PARMED Medical Scheme was registered on 29 March 1974 in terms of the Parliamentary and Provincial Medical Schemes Act 28 of 1975, membership of the Scheme is compulsory for and restricted to the following portfolios, effective from the date of appointment for the duration of the appointment term.​

​The President, Deputy President and Ministers, Judges of the Constitutional Court, Appeal Court or High Court of South Africa, Members of the National Assembly Members of the National Council of Provinces, Members of the Provincial Legislatures, and Retiring members of the above may also continue their membership of Parmed on request.
